Student Opportunities

I am interested in working with BIPOC and LGBTQ2+ students and strive to form a supportive and uplifting research environment. I am interested in working with Indigenous students and would be curious to engage in two-eyed seeing research.

I am interested in working with students from other departments if you have a co-supervisor identified.

Students must have at the very least a minor in Statistics or equivalent if entering a Master's program or an MSc in Statistics or equivalent if entering a doctoral program.   If you are interested in working with me, please email me at  lcowen (a t) uvic.ca and include

1) Your CV
2) Your unofficial transcripts
3) A brief statement outlining why you want to join us.

Potential graduate students should apply to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Check the admission requirements and submit documents by February 1st to be considered for funding.

I have some interesting projects suitable for undergraduate students.  If you are a strong upper-level
undergraduate student looking for research opportunities, come talk to me!

Domestic and Indigenous students should apply for NSERC Post-Graduate Scholarships.  These are due October 1 for PhD students and December 1 for MSc students. A first step towards this application is creating a CV using the Canadian Common CV.

Indigenous students have access to scholarships through AISES.

WWest maintains a list of scholarships open to various students but largely for women in STEM.  Another list is provided here.

The Gertrude M. Cox Scholarship is provided by the ASA for women in statistics.

For students from India or Indo-Canadian students check here for lists of various opportunities.  Also try the Pradeep Char Memorial Scholarship.

Chinese PhD students can apply for China Scholarship Council awards.
